News and Updates


1. The Local Organizing Committee met on 08 January to review and to lay emphasis on the work plan. Within this framework, work commissions have been confirmed for the different necessities and requirements for the preparation of the Congress. The work plans will be giving to the local coordinator and to the executive secretariat. Also, it has been considered to develop materials for diffusion for the congress, such as posters and informative pamphlets. Hopefully, this will aid in recruiting the local participation in the event.


2. On 06 December 2007, the Local Organizing Committee reviewed and extended the work plan proposal to develop and define commitments and responsibilities with the consult of each institution. Also, it is defined the seat of the Inauguration of the Congress of Ethnobiolgy will be the Inka Temple and the esplanade of the Qorikancha, in which a procedural act will take place, followed of a concert of traditional folk music. In a similar manner, these acts will be considered for the Closing of the Event, which could be carried out in the Esplanade of Sacsayhuamán. For this, the Secretariat and the local Coordinator, will have to make respective presentations before the Archbishop of the Cusco and the Provincial Municipality of the Cusco.


3. On 12 November, National Coordination met with the Local Organizing Committee of 11th International Congress of Ethnobiolgy, in order to consider a proposal for a work plan that should be reviewed by each member for the following session. Additionally, during upcoming meeting, the directors of the following institutions will visit.

• The Regional Director of the Regional Office of Foreign Trade and Tourism – DIRCETUR
• The Director of the National University of San Antonio Abad of Cusco
• The Manager of the Municipal Business de Festejos of Cusco
• The Mayoress of the Provincial Municipality of Cusco

The Secretariat, in addition will have to arrange appointments with other institutions such as:

• The Management of Tourism, Education, Culture and Environment of the Municipality of    Cusco
• The National Institute of Culture - Cusco, etc.

As result of the completed meetings, the Committee has:

- The Regional Department of Tourism of Cusco, through a designated representative,    has agreed to incorporate itself in the Local Committee and will support the logistical    organizing of the event
- The National University San Antonio Abad of the Cusco, will give academic endorsement    to the Congress. Also, it will offer the auditorium of the University Paraninfo, for the    needs of the Congress.
- The Municipal Business de Festejos of the Cusco, agreed to incorporate itself in the    Local Committee, to which it will offer support. Additionally, the Congress will comprise    part of the General Program of Festejos of the Cusco, for its diffusion at local, national    and international level.


4. In meeting on 25 October 2007, the Local Organizing Committee noted that laminated sheets should be printed to accompany official letters to the multitude of institutions that will support the Congress. Additionally, the committee decided that national coordination must offer greater links to the Organization of the Congress in order to obtain better contact with the International Society of Ethnobiology. On the other hand, the Secretariat of the Committee and its members, will have to arrange appointments with the directors of the institutions already identified in previous meetings.


5. On 12 September 2007, during the meeting of the Local Organizing Committee, the National Coordinator reported on activities that have been developed with the approach with the regional authorities in mind. Additionally during this meeting, commissions were formed within the Local Organizing committee in order to visit other identified organizations (National University San Antonio Abad of the Cusco, the Regional Office of External Commerce and Tourism, the Municipal de Business Festejos of the Cusco), which should become involved in the organization of the 11th International Congress of Ethnobiology.


6. In the Second Meeting of the Local Committee, held on 05 September 2007, the involvement of the Universities of the Region, as well as other organizations such as the Latin American Group of Ethnobiology – GELA was secured. Also, it was agreed upon that an Informative Brochure will be developed to accompany calls and/or requests to the diverse public and private institutions of the Cusco Region.


7. On 22 August 2007, the Local Organizing Committee of the 11th International Congress of Ethnobiology was installed.

The following institutions have agreed to conform to the plans of the Committee:

• National Institute of Culture – Cusco
• Provincial Municipality of Cusco through the Management of Tourism, Education, and   Environment
• Regional Environmental Commission - CAR Cusco
• Association ANDES
• Regional Government of Cusco through the Management of Natural Resources and   Management of Environment
• National Council for the Atmosphere - SER Cusco
• Regional Association of Ecological Producers of Cusco – ARPEC
• Regional Office of Agriculture - Cusco DRAC

The role of the Committee will be to act as base for coordination and support for the Congress, securing the activities for this event, and promoting scientific, cultural, and economic benefits for the Cusco region.
