THE ORGANIZATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF ETHNOBIOLOGY

 

The organizers of the Congress were:

Association ANDES
The Association for Nature and Sustainable Development, ANDES, is a non-government organization based in Cuzco, Peru. Association ANDES is recognized nationally and internationally for its work in the defense of the rights of indigenous peoples to genetic resources, their traditional knowledge and the conservation of the biological and cultural resources and the characteristics of the Andean landscape. ANDES’ programs link national and international policies in the defense of indigenous rights with the knowledge and action of the local scope. .

The Society for International Ethnobiology (SIE)
Throughout two decades, the Society has actively promoted and supported the inseparable links between biological and cultural diversity, and the vital roles of indigenous peoples and local communities with custody of the biological diversity and cultural heritage, including the recognition of the earth and the rights to resources, as well as the rights and responsibilities toward cultural and intellectual tangible and intangible property. The Society is committed to understanding the complex relationships that exist between human societies and their natural environments. A central value of the Society is the recognition of indigenous peoples as key actors in the conservation of biological, cultural and linguistic diversity.

LOCAL COMMITTEE
The Local Committee was installed on 22 August 2007 and its role was to act as a platform for the coordination and support of the Congress to ensure that the activities of this event, in addition to promoting Cuzco, provided scientific, cultural and economic benefit to the region. Similarly, it can be highlighted that success was achieved in regard to the coordination among the different sectors of regional and national government, as well as NGOs, universities, communities and others involved. The Local Organizing Committee was comprised of representatives from the following institutions:

    • Regional Directorate of Industry and Tourism – DIRCETUR, Cuzco
    • Provincial Municipality of Cuzco
    • Management of Tourism, Education, Culture and Environment – Provincial Municipality of Cuzco
    • National Environmental Council – CONAM, Cuzco
    • Regional Environmental Comission –CAR, Cuzco
    • Municipal Company of Cuzco Festivities - EMUFEC
    • National University of San Antonio de Abad of Cuzco
    • Association of Tourism Agencies
    • Association of Ecological Producers of Cuzco - ARPEC
    • Regional Directorate of Agriculture – DRAC, Cuzco
    • National Institute of Culture – INC, Cuzco
    • Association ANDES
  • The initial work of the Local Committee was the convening of the various institutions involved in it, whereupon having succeeded this task, conformed to the aforementioned. Similarly, the Committee held various coordination sessions, in which logistical organizational decisions about the Congress were made, achieving the establishment of the work plan that designated the commitments and responsibilities of each conforming institution. Also, it is fit to acknowledge the strong commitment of the local authorities in the organization of this event, which had been considered part of the Cuzco Festivities Program, thus giving the event the important recognition due to the 11th International Congress of Ethnobiology, held in the Incan city of Cuzco.


    About the Organization of the ICE 2008

    In order to achieve the objectives of the ICE 2008, the Organizing Commission developed a work plan that involved the conformity of a general coordination with committees and commissions responsible for the management of actions pre and during the congress.
